The most common method of checking the humidity levels of a humidor is through the use of an activation solution. This solution is a combination of propylene glycol and distilled water. It is recommended to treat the humidifier about once to three months, depending on the humidity extremes in your area.
It’s not a difficult task to check the humidity levels in your humidor. Rely on your hygrometer and make sure it’s calibrated. If you have a standard humidifier, rely on the manual and refill or replace the components as recommended. Replace packet humidification as needed and recommended by the manufacturer.
Your humidor seal is one of the most important parts of your humidor. Without it, you risk losing humidity, drying out your cigars, or allowing excess moisture to build up in your humidor, which can lead to mold or worse. A faulty humidor seal is the number one enemy of your cigar collection.
Before we go after the seal, make sure you have a calibrated hygrometer. If it’s off, we’ll proceed with the “whoosh test”. Open your humidor, then close it. Did you feel a little air escape? Did you hear a “whoosh”? If not, you may have a gap in your humidor seal. It should never close like your grandmother’s screen back door.
If your seal is broken have it repaired according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Make sure your humidor is in a cool and dry place to prevent mold growth. Secondly, keep your humidor away from direct sunlight. If you overheat your humidor, the humidity will rise along with the temperature, and you run the risk of mold, damaging fungus, and tobacco beetle infestations. Lastly, make sure when you put your new cigars into the box, you don’t block your humidifier vents.
